Yoga Dirgha Studies Certification (78 hours)

With yoga's increasing popularity, many students are interested in learning more about yoga than is available in weekly group classes, where the main ingredient is "asana" or the physical postures of yoga. While group classes may also touch on breath techniques, philosophy, chanting, and posture analysis, there is simply not enough time to do justice to those subjects.

Many students are turning to yoga teacher training programs in order to learn more about yoga, which usually means large expense ($3000 +) and a big commitment. For those students who feel that a calling to teach yoga, and possess the important qualities of a yoga teacher, it is well worth the time and financial commitement. Yoga teacher training is just one step in a long journey of training for such students.

For most people who may never teach yoga classes, but would like to learn more about yoga, we have created the Yoga Dirgha Studies Certification. Through the program, students gain a deeper understanding of the technical aspects of yoga postures, breathing and philosophy.

This is also an excellent program for those who are considering applying for a yoga teacher training program. Through learning more about the philosophy and practice of yoga, you will get a better understanding of yourself and whether or not the path of yoga is the right path for you.

Already have a yoga teacher training certification from another school? We think that you will find this program to be an excellent supplement to your prior learning. Call us to discuss whether or not this program would be suitable.

There are no pre-requisites for this program. You can join anytime, and you can take courses separately without working toward the Yoga Technician Certification.

Course Descriptions and Online Registration:

Yoga Philosophy 1

No prerequisite

The physical practice of yoga, what we know of today as "Yoga" or "Hatha Yoga," is only a small part of the vast field of yoga, which is based on ancient Indian philosophies. These philosophical texts can be challenging to understand without the guidance of a teacher who has, in turn, studied the texts with a teacher.

Drawing on her studies with TKV Desikachar, Dolphi Wertenbaker and Sonia Nelson, Caroline Owen brings illumination to the ancient texts, showing how they are as applicable to modern life as they were to the ancient yogis.

This workshop series consists of four classes (10 hours total) in which we will explore yoga philosophy through a combination of lecture, physical movement, group discussion, chant and homework readings.

Materials will be drawn mainly from The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Handouts are provided.

Cost: $120 +HST ($135.60)

Yoga Philosophy 2

No prerequisite

This workshop series consists of four classes (10 hours total) in which we will explore yoga philosophy through a combination of lecture, physical movement, group discussion, chant and homework readings.

Materials will be drawn from The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, The Bhagavad Gita, The Vedas and other classical Yoga texts. Handouts are provided.

Cost: $120 +HST ($135.60)

Yoga Asana 1

In group yoga classes, we move from posture to posture, and occassionally we'll also delve more into the function of a particular posture, as well as details of alignment. There is little chance to ask questions about the postures as we flow though a 75 or 90 minute class.

This workshop provides an opportunity to ask questions about the postures, as well as learn individual postures more thoroughly. We will explore the common postures of yoga, some of the benefits and cautions, how to practice safely, as well as preparatory and counter-postures.

Being integral to the practice of yoga, we will also be looking at how the breath affects the spine and how working with the breath along with the postures helps to bring depth and ease to both.

Each class will include both lecture (with handouts) and practice.

Cost: $120 +HST ($135.60)

Yoga Asana 2

Prerequisite: Asana 1

Building on the concepts from Yoga Asana 1, we will explore more postures in depth, and introduce the concept of putting postures together into a sequence for safely creating your own home practice.

This workshop is part of our new 75 hour Yoga Technician certification.

Cost: $120 +HST ($135.60)

Pranayama

The breath is central to yoga practice, yet can be confusing and seem overly complicated at times. This workshop takes the mystery out of breathing in yoga, teaching you concrete rules for when to inhale and when to exhale when doing postures. Also, we will explore the anatomical makeup of the breath, and how this affects our everyday posture and movement, and how making simple adjustments to the breath can improve both posture and movement.

What is the difference between belly breathing and chest breathing? Is one better than the other? Am I breathing correctly? Why do I tend to hold my breath when doing challenging postures? Why does focusing on the breath make me feel anxious sometimes? These are all common questions about breathing that we will explore, along with whatever other questions you bring along to this workshop.

We will also be looking at some of the most common breathing techniques in yoga practice today, and how to do them properly (and why!).

Don't worry, we won't be spending 2 1/2 hours each week sitting around breathing and talking about breathing! We'll also be doing lots of movement designed to free up the breath and bring awareness to the various muscle groups that support the breath.

Cost: $120 +HST ($135.60)

Vedic Chant

For thousands of years, all of vedic philosophy (the schools of thought that gave birth to yoga) was passed down orally in the form of chants that were taught to the student by a teacher who had learned from their teacher. Many of these chants have been lost in time, but we still have access to over 10,000 chants that have been preserved through this oral tradition, and now as written texts. Not only does chanting honour the sacred oral tradition, it also helps to calm and focus the mind, build breathing capacity and train the voice. Chanting has also traditionally been used in cultures all over the world to foster powerful healing

This workshop will give an overview of the fundamental principles of vedic chanting and introduce students to some of the most beloved healing chants from the vedas. Each class will include a movement and breathwork practice incorporating simple sounds to enhance the effectiveness of the asanas. A new chant will be introduced each week, and the previous week's chant will reviewed, with an opportunity to ask questions and make corrections.

You will learn the correct posture for chanting, how to breathe most effectively for vocal control (this also applies to singing) as well as the meaning of the chants that you will learn.

Cost: $120 +HST ($135.60)
