Registration Guidelines Yoga Lessons

New: Yoga Dirgha Studies (Certification Program)

A series of courses taking you deeper into an understanding of yoga philosophy, postures, breathing, and chanting for those who wish to learn more about yoga, but don't necessarily plan to teach yoga classes. Click here for details.

Group Yoga Classes

Wavelengths offers a variety of group classes in Peterborough, Norwood and Westwood, Ontario. Group classes are a great way to meet others, to feel like part of a supportive and health-oriented community as well as to be guided through a balanced practice. You will learn about yoga postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), meditation (dharana) and yoga philosophy. Group classes are often where people start when they decide to pursue an interest in yoga.

Small group classes allow for plenty of individual attention to students.

You can now register for group classes online, in person or by mail. Click here for registration information.

Yoga Therapy

While the traditional method of yoga instruction is one-on-one with a teacher, modern economics of scale, and convenience, have made group classes the norm. While a group class has many advantages (see above), the practice is generalized and does not address specific individual needs.

For instance, in a class where one student has high blood pressure and another suffers from depression, some aspects of these issues may be covered and some benefit received. But, the maximum benefit of working to minimize these issues can not be obtained in a group setting.

The wise words of the sage Patanjali point to individual learning for the best results: The maximum benefits of a yoga practice can only be obtained when "the correct practice is followed for a long time, without interruptions, and with a positive attitude and eagerness" Yoga Sutra I.14.

How do you know if you are doing the "correct practice"?

In a Yoga Therapy session, your needs, goals and time constraints are thoroughly examined and a personalized practice is created for you. During your session you are guided through the practice and at the end, given clear illustrated instructions to take home with you. Through ongoing contact with the teacher, the practice is modified as you progress.

The benefits of a regular yoga practice may include:

  • relief from acute or chronic stress
  • increased flexibility and mobility
  • improved digestion and other organ function
  • a natural boost to the immune system
  • relief from chronic pain, headaches and tension
  • increased confidence and well-being

Yoga Therapy sessions are available in Norwood, at WavelengthsYoga Studio and School. Contact us for more information.
